RB Approves Filberto Torres as the Assistant Principal of Athletics

On Tuesday, January 9, Riverside Brookfield High School approved the appointment of Mr. Filberto "Fil" Torres as the new Assistant Principal of Athletics. Torres is currently the Assistant Principal for Athletics/Activities at East Aurora High School, a position he has held for the past six years. He was selected from a pool of 35 candidates through multiple interview rounds and an interview committee of administrators, assistant athletic directors, coaches, teachers, student-athletes, parents, and a Sports Boosters representative. Torres will begin working at RB on July 1, 2024.

Torres has nearly 20 years of experience in the education and athletics field as a basketball coach, PE and driver education teacher, and athletic director. His current school district is in the Upstate Eight Conference, which RBHS is transferring to next school year. Before his current position, Torres played Division I college basketball at the University of Arizona. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Physical Education Teaching and Coaching at the University of Arizona and a Master of Education in Secondary School Administration/Principalship at Concordia University Chicago. Torres has an impressive career in coaching. He began his coaching career at Von Steuben High School and later became an assistant coach at a junior college in Pennsylvania. He returned to Chicago and became a full-time sub and basketball coach at Lindblom Math and Science Academy.

Torres served as an athletic director and a basketball coach at Chicago Talent Development High School, a charter school in Chicago that he and others helped build from the ground up. He ignited the school's sports program and helped the school gain IHSA and conference recognition. Later, at Lincoln Park High School, Torres oversaw 23 sports as an athletic director, PE teacher, and head varsity basketball coach. He began his career at East Aurora as a PE teacher and basketball coach, became an assistant athletic director, and is now the Assistant Principal for Athletics/Activities. As Assistant Principal for Athletics/Activities, he's overseen a $7.5 million stadium and track renovation, bleachers renovations, and gym floor resurfacing.

As an active Illinois Athletic Directors Association member and a District 5 Representative, Torres has written bylaws that allow athletic directors to be on the IHSA Board and added a board member position for underrepresented schools. He currently serves on the IHSA Legislative Commission.

Torres's experience and connections in the athletic director and education field make him an excellent candidate for the Assistant Principal of Athletics position. RB is ecstatic to welcome him to the RB community!
