Every school year, in addition to their four habitat restoration workdays, students in the Riverside Brookfield Ecology Club select an environmental issue and create a project to increase awareness about the problem and offer possible solutions.
After several months of research, the club created a detailed presentation on the health, economic, and environmental impacts of car idling at RB and presented it to several members of the RB Administration and Building and Grounds Department in early March. Below is the link to the presentation.

Those present were impressed by the students’ proposal, and Superintendent Dr. Skinkis gave the green light to proceed. The club then contacted the Villages of Riverside and Brookfield about purchasing and installing signs for Golf and Ridgewood Roads and student parking areas along Rockefeller and the RB tennis courts.
With the approval of Matthew Buckley, Village of Riverside Director of Public Safety, seven signs for Golf and Ridgewood Roads were purchased by the District shortly before spring break. The signs arrived early this week and were installed by Village Public Works Director Dan Tabb (RB Class of ‘99) on Friday, April 12th. Signs for the student parking areas will be purchased and installed shortly.
The RB Ecology Club hopes that all RB community members will do their part to reduce air pollution, conserve gasoline, and minimize idling’s impact on student health when waiting to pick up their child from RB. Turning off one’s car while waiting is a small thing that will make a big difference. The RB Ecology Club thanks you for your support!
