On behalf of the Organization of Latin American Students (OLAS), Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! From September 15th to October 15th, we come together to celebrate the vibrant culture, rich history, and diverse heritage of the Hispanic/Latino community.
The Chicano Movement, which emerged in the 1960s and 1970s, played a significant role in recognizing the contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. The movement advocated for civil rights, education, and cultural preservation. As part of these efforts, people lobbied for the establishment of Hispanic Heritage Month to raise awareness about the rich and diverse cultures within the Hispanic community. The influence of the Chicano movement played a pivotal role in the official recognition and celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, highlighting the significance of Hispanic heritage within American society.
Initially, Hispanic Heritage Month began in 1968 as a week-long observance under President Lyndon B. Johnson, but it was later expanded to a month by President Ronald Reagan in 1988. The starting date, September 15, was chosen to coincide with the independence anniversaries of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. The date after, September 16, marks Mexican Independence Day.
Starting today, we kick off our Hispanic Heritage Spirit Week with Suenos/Sweet Dreams, a day dedicated to following your dreams–we can’t wait to see your PJs or college shirts! After school, we will host a round of Loteria in room 210!
We look forward to a month filled with events and discussions brought to you by OLAS!
